今天上班好累...

0226 hedge

假期結束，無味垃圾話日記即將出現......

今天早上爬起來聽之前上課錄音的老方嘴砲，
背到了 contaminate 的類比:
(我上的那期從動詞開始教，就知道我進度有多慢 -.-)

hedge : loss = quarantine : contamination
to prevent loss : loss = to prevent contamination : contamination

我一直在那邊想...
hedge 這個字好像很眼熟，好像在哪看過，
老方則一直說這字是樹籬，有隔開的意思，
查了一下 m-w 名詞其中一個意思：
a fence or boundary formed by a dense row of shrubs or low trees，
嗯，這我懂，沒錯，樹籬笆...
另一個動詞的含意；
to protect oneself from losing or failing by a counterbalancing action: hedge a bet
嗯，有點感覺了，但還是想不起來...

終於，在洗臉的時候，我想起來了，
是避險 (對沖) 基金嘛...
hedge fund，這樣說我就很好記啦......:P

至於另一個 quarantine 也很好記，因為前幾天下載了一個天殺的含 adware 的電子書假檔，
害我用 anti-spyware 掃了半天，掃出一堆 adware，處理的動作就是 quarantine ...
(用英文版的好處，哈哈哈...)
我已經很久很久沒有中毒了耶，靠...

今天讀到了 Mr./Ms. Days 的 Apple經典廣告大集合，讓我也想來記一下我喜歡的廣告...
(其實更喜歡的是配樂 :P)

Web Video Channel

我想說的不是所謂 IPTV 或者 web TV，我沒想得那麼遠，我只是想聊聊，現在，
在網路上可以取得正版且免費的影片，他們還形成一種頻道的感覺，固定會有新片進貨...

我所知而且常看的有：
1. Google Video 的 engEDU，例如：
Barry Schwartz 的 The Paradox of Choice - Why More Is Less


2. YouTube 的 The New York Times，例如：
One Morning at Microsoft

(經典的 NYT's David Pogue on Windows Vista
居然搞什麼 Embedding disabled by request 只好放這片 :P)

3. YouTube 的 TEDTalks，例如：
TEDTalks: Barry Schwartz

(也是 Barry Schwartz，講的東西差不多，
不過在 engEDU 花了一小時多，在 TED Talks 只花二十分 :P)

TEDTalks: David Pogue

(又是 David Pogue 大叔，又是在取笑 Microsoft...:P)

4. YouTube 的 CBS，例如：
Microsoft's Vista Copies Apple OS?

(依然是 David Pogue 大叔，依然在嘲諷 Microsoft)
(這部其實就是經典的 David Pogue on Windows Vista，表情語氣較不機車版 XD)

這是我常看的幾個網路頻道，你呢？ :P

附帶一提，
YouTube 提供了 subscription 功能，可以專門訂閱某個使用者，
我得承認，我還訂了 dodolook 及 mydodolook ...
而 Google Video 提供了 recommendations，會根據 search history 推薦你可能會想看的 video，
(到現在為止，他推薦的都還蠻準的 :P)
另外 Google Video 其實可以用 RSS 訂閱，就只要在 query URL 後加上 output=RSS，像這樣：
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=google+engedu&page=1&lv=0&so=1&output=rss

不記得 dodolook 是誰？

Ze Frank

自從有次在 TED Talks 看過他的表演：

知道這就是外國網路上的搞笑高手，之後就再沒注意到他的身影...

不過最近在 43 Folders 的 Ze Frank, on procrastination 提到了他，
又再度讓我見識到 Ze Frank 的功力：

這真是反諷高手，教我們怎麼練習 procrastination，有趣，哈...:PPP

雖然在 TED Talks - Honesty's blog 已經有提過一些，

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

(英文講稿 Cheers中文譯稿)

其實這演說已經出來很久，2005 六月，還在國防部當兵，
就感動地加班印出講稿、蒐集 完整 audio 及 片段 video
後來還買了兩件「Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.」T恤，每天提醒自己，
更後來一點也在 Stanford on iTunes U 驚喜地發現有完整演講影片，
卻從來沒想過在 YouTube 或 Google Video 找一下......

前幾天趁過年整理一下 Google Reader 裡許多沒空讀的 RSS item，
讀到 Xerdoc Together 的 成为Steve Jobs的fans
才想到應該在網路上搜尋一下，如果有，一掉要嵌到 blog 上紀念一番，
搜了一下，果然有，所以我寫了這篇......:P

以下節錄我很喜歡的幾段話：

Connecting the dots:
It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me,
and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.
But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward.
You can only connect them looking backwards,
so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.

You have to trust in something--your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever--
because believing that the dots will connect down the road
will give you the confidence to follow your heart,
even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the difference.
(最後這句英文講稿有偷懶少打字 :P)

Love and loss:
But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did.
The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit.
I had been rejected, but I was still in love.
And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that
getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.
The heaviness of being successful was replaced by
the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.
It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple.
It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.
Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith.
I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.
You've got to find what you love.
And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life,
and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.
And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.
If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle.
As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.
And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.
So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

About death:
I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:
"If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"
And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered
to help me make the big choices in life.
Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure -
these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know
to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.
You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.
Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking.
Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
They somehow already know what you truly want to become.
Everything else is secondary.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

An Inconvenient Truth

很久沒坐在電腦前看電影時，可以耐住性子不快轉的...
節約能源、防止溫室效應，在之前就已經有從自己能力範圍開始做起了......:P

不過，最驚喜的還是，原來 Al Gore 是 presentation 高手！！！ :P

雖然這樣講可能背離其原意，但還是很想說，真是一場極為精彩的演說！ :P

剛複製下這部片名，才想到 happiness 是那樣拼嗎？ 或許是伏筆吧......:P

劇情：本片根據真實故事改編，可以說是永不妥協的男生版。
故事描述一個單親爸爸，因為事業失敗窮途潦倒到無家可歸，卻還得擔起撫養兒子的重擔。
為了兒子的未來，他重新振作，處處向機會敲門，
終於皇天不負苦心人，最後成為一個成功的投資專家。
而過程中支持他咬緊牙關的 最大動力，除了寶貝兒子外，就是他始終相信：
只要今天夠努力，幸福明天就會來臨…

(該片字幕及在 Google Video 打的上映日期都錯了，現在電視廣告都是 2 月 28 日 :P)

一直對這種親情勵志片一點抵抗力都沒有，希望這部不會讓人失望......:PPP

對了，這次片中的小朋友 Jaden Smith 還真是他兒子耶......:PPP

New Blogger !

其實早就有把這 blog 換成新版，但一直都沒動力整一下版面，今天總算有點小時間...
(其實也沒啥時間，只是一玩下去就沒完沒了 :p)

也早就想把這裡整頓一下，這樣一些 javascript 的 plugin 就可以在這裡實驗，
(wodpress.com 對 javascript 有限制，都要透過其 widget 或特殊語法才行 :p)
例如...... AdSense :PPP (我知道這沒啥流量啦，但就是想玩玩看嘛 :P)

嗯，玩了一個下午，改過三個 templates，還是改回最鍾情的 K2 template ...
新版的 blogger 還蠻好玩的，有像 wordpress.com 的 widget，
隨便在網路逛一下，真要 hack，blogger 好像還有很多東西可以玩...
像是剛好逛到的 Kaie's Blog 就有不少不一樣的東西，
不過，小小玩了一下 CSS，有過到 Custom CSS 的癮，也就懶了......:PPP
(在 wordpress.com，Custom CSS 可是要收錢的，pbwiki 也是)

算還挺滿意我改出來這樣的版面...(先把頁面佔滿，然後把字變大 :P)
還碰巧學會一樣 cross-browser 的小技巧，解決這個 template 原本有的問題...:P

要以前的我，大概就想說用 IE 的活該，而且我本來也跟 HTML、CSS 啥的很不熟，
工作以後，才勉強熟了一點，加上常常被要求得要兼顧 IE 的 user，
今天這個問題相較之下，還有和藹可親許多的感覺......:P
(不過，要是用 IE 看，還是有差一點 :P)

再來打算把這裡當成垃圾話集散地...
honesty's blog 放正式一些的東西，這裡就放些不經大腦寫出來的東西吧...:P
(其實 honesty's blog 也沒啥經過大腦 :P)

Google AdSense 不知要多久才審核完畢啊？
好想玩一下啊，哈！
